Indomie vs Golden Penny Noodles — Which Should You Buy?

Both are instant noodles cooked the same way in about three minutes, so the choice comes down to the taste your household grew up with and what you can actually find. Indomie is by far the more common of the two in UK African shops and is the one we stock, in cartons of 40.

We have not run a side-by-side taste test, so we will not crown a winner on flavour. What the table shows is what we can stand behind: the figures printed on the Indomie packs we sell, and where each is easy to find in the UK. For Golden Penny, the pack in your hand is the authority on size, nutrition and allergens.

What the two have in common

Both are wheat-flour instant noodles with a seasoning sachet, and both are cooked the same way: boil the block for two to three minutes, drain some or all of the water, and stir in the seasoning. In Nigerian homes either one becomes a full meal with a fried or boiled egg, sliced onion, pepper and a handful of vegetables. Our guide to cooking Indomie the way Nigerians actually do works for both.

Where they differ

Familiarity. Indomie has been made in Nigeria since the late 1980s and is the name most people use for instant noodles in general, the way people say Hoover for a vacuum cleaner. For many families in the UK, Indomie Chicken is the taste of home, and nothing else quite replaces it.

Availability. Indomie is easy to buy by the carton from UK African grocers and online. Golden Penny noodles turn up less often, mainly in specialist shops, so if you need a regular supply the practical answer is usually Indomie.

Nutrition. Instant noodles are a convenient, filling, energy-dense food, and both brands carry a good deal of salt in the seasoning — an Indomie Chicken pack has about half an adult's daily salt reference intake on UK labels. Using half the sachet is the simplest way to cut it. Our Indomie calories guide has the full panel.

Which should you buy?

Choose Indomie if you want the familiar Nigerian taste, you buy by the carton, or you want it delivered — we send Indomie Chicken in boxes of 40.

Choose Golden Penny if it is the brand your family prefers and your local African grocer stocks it. Check the pack for size, nutrition and allergens.
