Modern Kitchen Island, Sideboard

A kitchen island has to earn its floor space, and this black freestanding unit is designed to do more than one job. The main body measures 140 cm long, 40 cm deep and 90 cm high, putting the worktop at a comfortable standing height for food preparation and roughly level with most fitted counters. The fold-out tabletop is the detail that sets it apart. Raised and locked into position, it adds a further 70 cm of usable surface, turning a slim storage unit into a breakfast bar or a compact dining table for two. Folded away again, the island returns to its original footprint, which matters a great deal in a kitchen where every centimetre counts. Storage is arranged across a set of drawers and open shelving, so everyday items stay within easy reach while bulkier equipment can be tucked out of sight. The drawers suit utensils, tea towels, cutlery and small appliances. The open shelves are well proportioned for cookbooks, storage baskets, jars and serving dishes, the sort of things you would rather display than hide behind a door. Keeping preparation tools beside the work surface rather than scattered across cupboards makes a noticeable difference to how a kitchen actually runs. The unit is constructed from MDF with a black finish that wipes clean and stands up to the marks a working kitchen inevitably produces. Black is a forgiving choice in this setting, and the restrained styling sits comfortably alongside modern, country and industrial schemes without competing with cabinetry you already own. Because the piece is freestanding rather than fitted, it can be placed against a wall as a sideboard, positioned at the end of a run of units, or pulled into the middle of the room as a genuine island. The island is supplied flat-packed in two cartons with fittings and instructions included, and home assembly is required. It suits kitchens, dining rooms and open-plan living spaces where extra preparation and serving surface is welcome, and works equally well as a coffee station, a bar or a serving counter when you are entertaining.
